Final Paper due December 12, 2016 by midnight (Papers should be submitted to the D2L Dropbox – located under ‘Assessments’) In the format of a typed, double-spaced, 4-6 page essay address the following: “Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally - either directly or through elected representatives - in the proposal, development, and creation of laws.” The United States prides itself on being the first nation in modern history to adopt a democratic constitution. Our government even tries to spread democracy to other countries. But, is the Unites States really a democracy in the full sense of the word? Write an essay that argues that the United States is not really a democracy. In doing so, emphasize non-democratic practices, outcomes, and inconsistencies of American politics. Suggestions: You may do some outside research. However, it is entirely possible to write an excellent paper based on the readings you have already done or on the lectures. You may look more closely at: - Gerrymandering - Electoral college - Republic vs. Democracy - Intentions of founding fathers - History of racism and discrimination
