See page 527 in A Writer's Reference for a sample of an abstract. Thesis Paper (already completed): Taxation is an important economic tool for any country. Taxation refers to the process where the state enforces charges on people and commercial businesses (Oats 5). The economy of a country is sustained substantially by the tax imposed on aspects of the economy. The funds raised by the state are used to finance various state initiatives that serve to profit the inhabitants of a country. The taxation process is therefore meant to serve the needs of the society and the corporate world. It is imperative to note that various classes of tax exist. These tax categories are formulated to meet various ends, with the main goal being economic growth and sustenance. One of the tax categories is the Fat tax. Fat tax is imposed on foods and beverages that are regarded to contain extreme levels of fats (Leicester and Frank 12). These foods tend to increase cases of obesity in the country hence reducing productivity of the citizens. This taxation regime is meant to curtail unhealthy eating habits among citizens of a country and subsequently reduce the economic costs associated with obesity. Various studies contend that there is a correlation between food prices and the size of individuals. That is, as the cost of a food reduces, people become fatter. This approach of taxation has been deemed retrogressive because a majority of the poor spends substantial amounts of their income on food (Strnad 20). This paper will provide arguments against this approach by governments to induce Fat tax as an approach to curb the economic costs associated with obesity. This tax approach will shift the burden directly to the poor people. Research has shown that the poor will spend their income on food regardless of increase in prices (Strnad 30). The Fat tax approach aims to increase taxes on fatty foods hence by extension increasing the prices of these foods. This will be detrimental to the poor who are a minority. The majority of the population is capable of cutting back on their expenditure on food (Andreyeva et al 218). This same majority is responsible for various economic activities in the country like operating business ventures and offering productive hours in corporate cycles. Since the poor will spend on food regardless, the cases of obesity will still be high; and continuously put the burden of hospital costs on the government through various programs like Medicare and Medicaid. The government can minimize the economic costs associated with obesity through other initiatives that have proven successful in other countries. Rigorous sensitization of healthy lifestyles in various cycles will greatly reduce cases of obesity and keep the country on track towards economic sustainability. This sensitization can be achieved through cooperation between various intergovernmental and the health care department. Mass education on healthy lifestyle will ensure that citizens incorporate healthy lifestyles in their culture right from childhood. This approach is comprehensive since it ensures that both the poor and the rich are catered for in the efforts to enhance economic sustainability through reduction of costs associated with obesity. Other than imposing Fat tax on selected commodities, the government can ensure that healthy foods are substantially subsidized. Healthy foods are known to be expensive as compared to unhealthy fatty foods. Therefore, subsidization of these healthy foods will ensure that people consume healthy foods, and consequently adapt healthy lifestyles (Andreyeva et al 218). These measures will greatly improve the economic sustainability of the country in the long term since it will be part of the citizens’ culture to adapt a healthy lifestyle. Tax regimes are subject to changes and regulations unlike culture which is passed down from generation to generation. Work cited Andreyeva, Tatiana, Michael W. Long, and Kelly D. Brownell.
