Section I: Background of the Profession Health information managers (HIM) work in various healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, offices, and nursing centers. The roles and responsibilities of this professionals depend on the context in which they work. However, the primary role of health information managers is safeguarding patient data as required by legal, state, and federal requirements. The confidentiality and integrity of patient data lie in the competence of health information managers. Additionally, patients often require ethical handling of their data. Health information managers are required that data and information uphold the highest ethical standards. For instance, when information is shared, it should be done within the frameworks provided for in the law.

Organizations that uphold these standards have realized considerable leverage in their operations. Section II: Need for the Specialty The demand for health information managers is projected to increase, at least with the need to implement electronic health records (EHR) in healthcare. Accordingly, candidates with specialization in health administration, especially in master’s degrees, will have the highest prospects in this explosive growth. As well, in the path of career progress and advancement, those already working in health information management can enroll for a master’s degree in the program. There are similarities in the courses offered at master’s degree. Such topics include statistics, financial management, legal issues, and ethics. There are course-based programs and research-based programs as options in the path of career advancement.
