Black goes as far as to claim that Mark was the first historian of the accounts of Christ. His portrayal of Jesus from the first verse of his book is that of a savior whose arrival was the work of God himself. He portrays Jesus from an aspect of the messiah of both Israel and the nations, an aspect that is uncharacteristically Christian. This paper will look to further explain the events of where Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem by giving an exegesis of Mark from his point of view (Mark 10: 32-45, New International Version). The Exegesis of Mark In the excerpt from the bible (Mark 10; 32-45), Mark narrates the events as they head back into Jerusalem. This shows his conviction to carrying out his mandate as he was instructed by the Lord.

The culmination of Jesus ministry on earth was visible at this point due to the huge masses that were ready to receive him in Jerusalem. They were intent on seeing him, listening to his teaching and watch him perform miracles, perhaps even get healed themselves. His legend had already spread throughout the nation of Israel and beyond and this proved to be the epitome of his ministry while he was still alive. In the gospel according to Luke, there are several omissions to what Mark said. The account given by Matthew states that it was the mother to John and James who made the plight to Jesus in their stead. The omission could potentially result from misogyny that was present in the ancient period but without any proof that remains to be speculated upon.

The response from Christ however is similar in both accounts as they both say that Jesus stated that they know not what they are asking for. When the Jews were told of the prophecy of a king who would lead, them to salvation, they expected a military leader. They expected a king who would fight for them against the oppression of the Roman reign. The popularity he had amassed had threatened the stability of the Jewish leadership structure that led to them plotting to have him crucified. The story of Jesus’ final journey to Jerusalem is significant as He warns the disciples of the impending danger and grief that awaits them in Jerusalem. His prediction of the impending danger and His willingness to continue with the journey to Jerusalem show extreme resilience on His part and provides insight into his commitment to suffer for the human race.

The journey portrays Jesus as the way to the kingdom of heaven and in order to get in it has to be through him and his teachings. Another significance of the story is the statement by Jesus of his resurrection. Service to the people is the most significant thing as a leader and he made the point as strong as he possibly could. Discussion The main theme in this excerpt is service from a leadership perspective. His teachings have helped transform the view on leadership and move some way from the subjects serving the leaders to the leader serving the led (Manz, 2011). Jesus points out the gentiles, who back then were the Romans, way of leadership and insists that whoever wants to be great must first humble themselves.
