Mandatory GOVT2305 Writing Assignment
Bang for the Buck: These two links are your research/book-review essay. You need not do any other research. Simply start by reading this article and and the link to the Texas statutory gun law. Click on the New York Review of Books link above. It takes you to a book review of three books. You are to read the article about these three books. Your paper is based on these two links. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) link takes you to a booklet, "Texas License to Carry a Handgun."
The purpose of this paper is to give you an opportunity to learn the history of guns, the Second Amendment and the state laws that give Texans the right to carry a handgun.
Answer the following questions regarding the history of guns in the United States:
Give a brief history of guns in the United States based on your reading of "Bang for the Buck." What information regarding the history of guns surprised or interested you?
Discuss the confusion surrounding the meaning of the Second Amendment.
What are the requirements for Texans seeking a license to carry a handgun as outlined in the DPS handbook on page 8 under GC §411.174. APPLICATION
The paper is structured to have two distinct parts--Answer three major questions and answer questions about how you were politically socialized.
The paper is not about any particular shooting. It is not about whether or not you personally are licensed to carry a handgun--please do not include that unsolicited information.
As you read in your chapter about political participation and public opinion formation, you learned that how you perceive political events are influenced by a number of factors. Please answer the following questions in your paper about the factors that shape your view of the history of guns, the Second Amendment and handgun licenses in Texas.
Answer the following questions in your essay. Remember these answers are strictly confidential. This is an exercise or inventory to help you understand what influences your political views and socialization.
Where are you from—where did you grow up—and did your hometown, state, or country influence your political beliefs?
How did you learn about government growing up?
How did the area of the country or the world you’re from help determine your political socialization?
What influenced and how your political socialization—your parents, your religion, your peers, your school, the media?
If you’re 18 or older and a citizen, are your registered to vote and have you voted before? Why or why not?
The paper is short --1000 words--and is due on April 30, 2018 at 11:59 PM via Canvas.
MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PAPER:
1000 Words, Minimum. You can write beyond that if you wish but points will be deducted for papers under 1000 words. Five points off for every 25 words under 1000.
Write your essay on a word processor with Microsoft Word. Highlight your document, copy it, and then paste it onto the dialogue box on the Canvas site for submission of your paper. Look over the pasted document to make sure nothing has been left out.
Provide the word count at the end of your essay. When you type a document on Microsoft Word, Word automatically counts the number of pages and the words at the bottom left of the workspace in the status bar. If you don’t see the word count in the status bar, right-click the status bar and click “Word Count.” You can also go to “Tools” on a classic Word, menu, pull down and click on “Word Count”. And as stated above if the word count is below 1000, then you will lose points.
If you do not type in bold print the word count at the bottom of the paper I will penalize your paper by five points.
Write this paper in your own words. Don’t worry if you’re ESL or if you don’t think you are a good writer. I want to hear your ideas and your experiences. Your impressions. All in your own words. I am not grading for grammar. I am grading on content and meeting the minimum requirements set out in the instructions.
Do not plagiarize. Do your own work. You have to write what is in your head, heart, and mind. Your words are better than anyone else’s in telling me about what you know and what you think and believe. Do not risk flunking this assignment by plagiarizing. If you plagiarize you will receive a zero and that zero will not be dropped. If you quote material from the article or the DPS handbook, be sure to put the quote within “quotation marks” and indicate it came from the article or the handbook.
I check for plagiarism.
Paper is due by 11:59 P.M. on April 30, 2018. Do not think you can write up until the dead line and have a worry-free submission. Something will go wrong. Please turn it in earlier that day. Do not wait until the last minuet and expect an extension. I do not have the ability to give extensions this late in the semester. Final exams are coming. So get this submitted on time and push forward.
WORD COUNT: This document contains 875 words.
