The Cherokee Nation and the Trail of Tears

The Cherokee Nation and the Trail of Tears Historians Theda Purdue and Michael D. Green conclude their book with these final thoughts: The Cherokees intend to be around for a long time. Today there are 240,000 citizens of the Cherokee Nation and 10,000 members of the United Keetoowah Band in Oklahoma and 13,500 enrolled members of the Eastern Band in North Carolina. Thousands of other Americans have Cherokee ancestry. The Trail of Tears is their story, but it is also an American story. And if it is a story we are not proud of, we should make sure that its lesson is well learned: Racism, greed, and political partisanship can subvert even the noblest American ideals. (p. 164) I believe we can all agree that the Trail of Tears was tragedy and we would be wise to learn the lessons on racism, greed, and political partisanship. I would invite you, however, to think more deeply about this question of “American ideals,” noble or otherwise. Does the Indian Removal Act and Cherokee Trail of Tears reflect actual American ideals (for example, an expansionist nation determined to acquire territory to benefit whites at the expense of non-whites) or as an aberration of American ideals (for example, the nation which proclaimed “all men are created equal” in its founding document and whose entire history has been marked by a complicated—but ever expanding—expansion of freedoms and liberties)? Or is it both? What does the Cherokee Trail of Tears tell us about “American ideals”? Remember, you will be producing an evidence-based historical argument. This means that I am not reading your papers looking for the “right” answer. Frankly, this is a tough question that gets at your interpretation of the very essence of the United States. I care much less about which direction you take this essay than I do that you know how to support your argument with evidence! Opinions are easy. Arguments are hard, and I am asking you to make tough decisions here. There are many appropriate responses to this question (and there are many inappropriate ways to answer this question). What your paper will be evaluated upon the strength of your argument and your use of evidence to support your argument. Students must answer this prompt using only course readings assigned in class and primary sources (sources from the time period, which may be found online). Any paper containing information from sources outside the classroom (primary sources excepted) will receive an automatic 0. Additionally, grammar, mechanics, and writing style will also shape your final grade. Finally, as an evidence-based paper you must cite your research using a formal manual of style (Chicago, MLA, APA, etc.). Citations must be used for direct quotations and when you paraphrase information. Since you need bibliographic information to properly cite a resource, be careful with Internet research and be very skeptical of websites. Instead of Wikipedia, use Credo Reference, a database of peer-reviewed encyclopedias available through Mercy College’s Library website (and accessible off campus). Instead of that blog entry, examine the library’s collection of books, journals, and articles on African history. Even the print publications are going to be indexed for easy access (I have observed many students over the years spend hours on Google to avoid a 30-minute perusal of a book index. As a rule, try not to do more work to avoid doing less work). Please note that additional research is at the discretion of the student. An ‘A’ paper can be written by using only the course readings. Please submit roughly 5 page paper using 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins. Good luck!
