(Individual Assignment): Each student should write a summary of one of the articles used and cited in the oral presentation. Each student must summarize a different article. Classify sections of the article and use the reading strategy provided to help deconstruct it. Label sections, make notes, write down potential questions, identify terms that are new, and point out aspects of the article that you find interesting, or question. This review will be due at the start of the final lab before oral presentations.
Here are a few questions you should ask yourself after reading a scientific article. These questions should be addressed in a good review! The format of the literature review should be ~2 page, typed with 1.5 text spacing.
1. Write a 1-2 paragraph brief summary of the article in your own words! In this summary you should note the following (if applicable):
a. What is the geophysical technique(s) employed by the author(s) and how is it applied to their stated problem?
b. What do the author(s) discover through application of this technique(s)?
c. If the article is a literature review article, what new insights does the author(s) provide from synthesizing previous work?
Other things to address in your literature review (you should pick at least one of the following choices):
A. Where would you go next with this study? Can you think of a research project to address the unanswered questions raised in the article?
B. Identify parts of the article that you don’t understand or parts that weren’t clear to you.
C. What are the weak parts of the article? Are there limitations on the application of the methods used? Are the data adequate to support the conclusions?
D. Anything else relevant you can think of relating to the article. 2
