The most controversial features of the original law (i.e., HB 56) that were passed required that teachers report whether students were “illegal” immigrants, required that police arrest anyone who was suspected of the being an immigrant, and a persons who gave an immigrant a ride could be charged with a crime. Some critics deemed the law as draconian, a vestige of Jim Crow, and comparable to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. In contrast, others supported the law based on the perception that the law protected jobs and increased public safety. Research and discuss Alabama’s, and other states’, anti-immigration laws.
