First, you will write a short (2-3 page) analysis of your rhetorical situation as you reflect on the readings we’ve done for this unit. Use the “Questions for Analyzing Your Rhetorical Situation” and the sample analysis on pp. 54-57 in order to shape your own piece of writing. This will help you become more comfortable with reflecting on your writing as you move on from this class. Afterwards, please use the readings to advance an argument about the role of free speech and trigger warnings on campus in a 4-6 page essay. Remember to use the analytical skills we’ve been developing all semester as you shape your argument. Evaluative Criteria Rhetorical Situation Analysis: Do you consider your role as a writer, your reader, the limitations on your text, and the medium you wish to use? Do you consider the challenges you may face as you build your argument? Final Draft: Do you go beyond a binary response (“I agree/don’t agree, like/don’t like, am interested/not interested in X” (Ede 128))? Are you engaging with your sources while pursuing your own project? Do you analyze those sources? (Remember, analysis might include, but is not limited to, discussing personal experience, considering rhetorical appeals, explaining the implications of an argument, considering tone, etc…look back at the WPAE worksheet for suggestions!) Do you articulate what’s at stake? Do you demonstrate knowledge of your rhetorical situation by employing the conventions of standard written English? Articles website
