DIGITAL COMMUNICATION

1. Examine one popular virtual society, Facebook, and write an essay that presents and analyzes one effect that the virtual society has on a specific group of users (e.g. college students, artists, seniors, etc.) TOPIC #2 IS NOT AVAILABLE TO YOU UNLESS YOU SPEAK TO ME PRIOR. 2. Choose your own tightly focused topic on Digital Technology and construct an argumentative essay around it. Audience: Your reader is an English instructor that believes writing is dynamic based on context. As a member of academia, he expects academic writing; however, apart from grammar and mechanics, there are no firm concrete rules to style and tone: just consistency in both style and tone. Pet Peeves: hates the 5 paragraph essay. ● Essays must follow MLA Formatting Guidelines. ● Essays must reach 1100 word count minimum, both in their final draft, and as a peer review and/or conference ready rough draft. ● Essays must include at least two outside sources, including a Works Cited page. Grading Rubric http://edwardyoo.blogspot.com/2015/10/digital-communication-grading-rubric.html I. Introduction Grab the reader's attention Thought provoking question Staggering Statistic Enlightening Quote Unique Definition Detailed Anecdote Refer to "Notes: Sample Introductions" Offer the main point (thesis) Refer to "Notes: Theses" for an example of a strong academic thesis. II. Body Paragraphs Transitional Device Transitions are not expected between the introduction and first body paragraph, nor the final body paragraph and the conclusion; they are, however, expected between the body paragraphs themselves. Refer to "Notes: Transitions" Topic Sentence This is often attached to the transitional device in the same sentence. Example Research: statistics, facts, article quotes, headlines, surveys, experiments Narrative: personal example Compare and Contrast Exposition: defining an idea Counterargument: avoids bias; illustrates the writer is aware of the other side; best used when arguing the minority position; should almost always counter the counterargument. Avoid generalizations, hypotheticals, and over-reliance on personal examples and isolate incidences. Explication Connect the example back to the primary argument. Refer to "Notes: Sample Supporting Body Paragraph with Example & Explication" III. Conclusion Reassert your main point Avoid summary, which reads as repetitive, redundant, and unnecessary for a three page essay. Leave the reader with a strong last impression Framing device: readdress your hook in your conclusion. Answer the question, "So what?" The reader has read your argument: why should they care? What does it matter?
