On the second part, Vanderhaeghe defines the situations of two nations before and after they acquired freedom and independence and on the third aspect, the author gives the true story of two young men; the Englishman and Harry Vincent. In the beginning, Vanderhaeghe explains how the native men engaged with the cowboys and the horses. Scene after scene, he brings out one character at a time and displays their roles and the tactics they use to pass the information to the audience. Published in 1996 by McClellaand and Stewart in its native Canada, this book is the most successful of Vanderhaeghe’s books. In the same year of publication, the book won the Governor general Award for English language fiction, not to mention being nominated for the Giller Prize.

The author brings out the behavior of the character using his body physique. For example, he defines the character as a ‘skinny boy with anthracite eyes' (Vanderhaeghe 33). The author continues describing the Englishman boy using his distinguished personality and role in two different eras. The author shows how the main character maintains his behavioral and emotional patterns. Being a loyal person, the Englishman boy is loyal and he is seen working with his servant in hunting and taking care of the horses. He is seen from the first chapter so much troubled as a report of the local newspaper. Even though Harry Vincent is a reporter, sometimes he goes hunting as a hobby. In one incidence Harry Vincent wrote a report on how about the transition of America from the past to the present and his boss found it ideal to sell the paper to many people in the United States.

Harry Vincent does not obligate the idea since he receives a good remuneration package and he enjoys the environment in the business, Vanderhaeghe argues that Harry Vincent could not leave his present employer because his mother is paid every week by the same company (Vanderhaeghe 19). Harry Vincent says " for so long my mum has been away from me amidst apathy" (Vanderhaeghe 25). Nevertheless, he remains strong and withers all the storms as well as ensures that everything moves on smoothly. Vanderhaeghe brings out the true identity of Harry Vincent and most of the readers feel sorry for him. The author used Harry Vincent to indicate the various ideals that define personality. In the next chapters, Vanderhaeghe brings out the personality of Harry Vincent of being a risk taker.
