There are many genres of online multiplayer games. In this project, your task is to conduct an observational study of actual gameplay, report your findings regarding and communication processes, and make inferences about segmentation. Any game that relies heavily on teamwork and communication will be satisfactory, such as League of Legends, DOTA 2, Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Counterstrike, etc. Games that are not centered around team play, such as Hearthstone, Minecraft, Madden, etc., are not good choices.
This is an observational study, so resist the urge to relate your own past personal experiences and knowledge. Ideally, you should make multiple observations by watching actual and/or recorded game play, watching recorded play (e.g., youTube), etc.
To conduct an observational study, you should identify the variables of interest (what to watch for), and note specific events related to the behaviors of the players. For example, you might state that at 4:06 of the video, you observed player A communicate a message to Player B, who responded in a particular way. Based on this interaction, or a group of interactions, you may then make conclusions as to the type and effectiveness of this communication or group of communications. Importantly, you should use concepts in interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence, and persuasion in your analysis.
If you choose to describe the game in an introduction, please do so in no more than one paragraph. The objectives of the game, the way it’s played, the roles, etc., aren’t particularly important for the project. Communication and segmentation issues matter most.

-What were the relative amounts of informing, persuading, and reminding communications that you observed?
-Would you describe the communication as more “centralized” or “decentralized,” i.e., by fewer members or most members of the group/team?
-Describe the types and amounts of task oriented vs. socially oriented communication observed.
• How effective was the communication you observed?
-What were the effective and ineffective communications you observed? Why?
-How did the characteristics of the communications noted above correlate with game success?
• What are the “segments” in the games you observed and have researched?
-This is not about defining the market, e.g., asserting that younger people, especially males, play the game, or simply describing the roles played in the game. Rather, what are the different types of people that play the game? You can use any of the segmentation bases described in class, or others that your analysis and research may uncover.
This project depends upon the quality of your observational study, the analysis of your observations on the communication issues outlined above, and the inferences about game segments derived from your observations and research. You may include your specific observations in an appendix if you like.
