Students will be assessed on their ability to convincing respond to question(s), using both theory and data covered in class. Thus, the response papers need to be both persuasive and expository, and should be well written. Appropriate and convincing use of data (e.g., statistics, specific examples) will account for up to 50% of content grade, while use of concepts and theories introduced in the readings will account for the remaining 50% of the grade. Content from the assigned monograph should be drawn from the entire text, not just the first chapter/s (although this is where the theoretical frames are often detailed). Poor organization and/or writing and/or editing will result in up to a 3-point deduction. Response papers should not use or any sources outside those assigned for class (including those that may be part of the question itself), but may reference other readings and student case study reports. Students that use outside sources will have their scores reduced by 20% (5 points). Quotations of more than five words are specifically disallowed (and will result in a 2 point deduction for each quotation of more than five words); use only page number when citing unique terms or data points (e.g., a statistic or a specific example) from the assigned monograph, e.g., (p. 105); author and page from other sources, e.g., (Vargas, 105); and author only for general references (Vargas).

1. Compare and contrast Vargas’s method of “relational ethnography” with Goffman’s more traditional interactionist ethnography.
