The counselor may use the following instruments to assess the situation, Scale Value and Value Scales, the California Personality Inventory and the 16 Personality Questionnaire. Also, used are the Kuder Career Search and the Strong Interest Inventory; and the Differential Aptitude Test (DAT), and the General Attitude Battery. These measures are used in defining the various traits essential at work. Work adjustment theory The theory was defined by Lofquist and Darwin in the periods of 1969 and 1991 respectively. The theory is a reflection of the trait theory where it is a continuous process by which a worker strives to adjust to the environment. It adopts the genetic endowments, career decisions, and individual learning processes to define a person. Krumboltz opines that people compare their performance rates, skills and abilities against a standard to determine their worth.

It is upon such decision that an individual assesses his status in the overall process of duty allocation. Social cognitive career theory The theory has a leaning with the social cognitive theory. Existing contexts define cognitions, goals and interests, self-efficacy, expectations of outcomes and perceptions about barriers and support issues at work. In practice, the theory has been implemented widely. A counselor can assess the client’s ability to move to the next level based on their initiative at work and interests, values and attitudes. Hopson and Adam emphasize immobilization, minimization, self-doubt, letting go, testing out, searching out and eventual internalization as a strategy to understand their conditions.

Essentially, the model helps in identification of the challenges that clients may be facing. My most liked theory of career development and counseling The career development theory as described by Super qualifies as my favorite. While I can determine from the readings the different types of theoretical models of career counseling, Super’s classification of the career development process is intriguing. As a counselor, I visualize the transition in professional undertaking involving and aimed at maximizing the gains of both the client as well as the organization they are affiliated. Additionally, the career development theory and the relational approaches are fascinating in guiding the individual in making occupational and career choices through transitioning, in reality, people may seek specific careers to satisfy their family, status, autonomy.

Roe’s ideas present the essential impacts parents have on their children as pertains career choices. The attachment theory which magnify the role of relationships and contacts provide a chance to identify with the society and prescribe treatment plans. However, Philip’s theory delineates how a decision could be made based on available information from parents, personal attitudes as well as any anticipated approach take (Roe & Lunneborg, 990). The relational approaches to counseling and the Super’s theory of career counseling are essential in unearthing most of the challenges that may implicate autonomy in making decisions about life careers.
