Moby Dick Research Paper (Example)

Document Preview:

Name: Professor: Course: Date: The Theme of Fate and Free Will in Moby Dick Fate is a debatable aspect in the manner it exists. Some individuals tend to believe in it while others don’t. In Moby Dick Herman Melville has masterfully interwoven the theme of fate and free will within the novel. Melville does not disguise the discussion of this motif in the novel. He comprehensively uses this motif within “The Mat-Maker ” where free will fate and chance are the key elements of the chapter. This does not mean that fate and free will are not covered in other chapters as well. In fact fate is a notion that is common all through the novel. Fate plays an imperative role when considering what sort of novel “Moby Dick” is. In this book Melville attempts new adventures without a specific purpose or aim and for that he seems as the way he brings out the theme of fate and free will in his novel Moby Dick. Honestly the issues that Melville is trying to bring out are difficult to identify and comprehend but his ideas of fate and those of free will are easy to point out in this novel. According to Melville free will and fate are intertwined but it is fate is superior. This books clearly illustrates that individuals develop different notions with regards to matters of life and death. Through his characters (Ishmael Queequeg Ahab and Father Mapple) Melville tries to show the reader how free will and fate are intertwined. Melville’s statement with regards to death and life signifies that fate and free will do interact. Work Cited Melville Herman. Moby-Dick (Norton Critical Editions). WW Norton & Company 2018.
