Some of the tests that have come under scrutiny include the yearly pap smears yearly physicals and frequent PSA tests. Despite being costly the tests are also said to be hazardous as they have dangerous side effects. The medical societies comprising of 725000-member doctors has however initiated action to make medical testing safer and more effective. The move has been inspired by the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation (ABIM) through its choosing wisely campaign. Since the start of the campaign ABIM has highlighted over 130 tests questioning their necessity. Medical specialty groups who are key stakeholders in the health sector are working in conjunction with ABIM to improve on costs and make health care more efficient unnecessary tests should be identified and eradicated or regulated. However the problem arises among medical professionals when reaching an agreement to ascertain which test are necessary and which ones are not and further convincing the public of effective treatment without some tests and procedures.
