Canadian Government Should Support Network Neutrality Name: Institution: Canadian Government Should Support Network Neutrality According to Gasher Skinner & Lorimer (2016) there has been a shift in media and communication systems with digitization and new media influencing current media issues and trends. While many feel that the right to express oneself and form personal opinions is an integral and crucial element of democracy enshrined and protected in section 2(b) of the Canadian constitution i.e. Charter of Rights and Freedoms five decades later the battle field is fresh for an intriguing war on net neutrality i.e. treating all networks with equality. Way back in 1982 the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was signed into law to enforce the Canadian Bill of Rights enacted in the 1960. With advancement in technology and communication taking the center stage the protected freedom of opinion expression thought and speech not to mention freedom of ideas in the internet and communication in addition to leveling the playing field for all internet stakeholders and stockholders alike. Even though critics see net neutrality and government support as a counterproductive move that limit investment and discourage ISPs’ flexibility to innovate it is not hard to see that their argument is less objective and one that requires sympathy. Nonetheless they have a point. References Canadian Business News (2017).
