The speech was given to set the precedence in the election that was due in the course of the same year. The major reason for giving the peach was political Barrack was not only introducing himself to the national politics but he was only selling John a large population into taking action about the direction in which their lives were taking. It was this speech that actually made Barrack Obama to be known not only in America but to the whole world. He became famous because of this one speech and if I may deduce majority of Americans voted him in 2008 based on this speech.
