To begin with the land promise, the essence of this promise is to give Abram and his descendants a land (Genesis 12:1-7). Tracing the history of Old Testament, this promise if fulfilled when the children of Israel enter the land of Canaan, “And God spoke to Moses and said to him: "I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham……. and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the LORD” (Exodus 6:2-8). This promised is also spoken about in Deuteronomy at the time Moses was talking to people of Israel in the land of Moab, “7 Turn and take your journey, and go to the mountains of the Amorites…… (Deuteronomy 1:6-8). 3:7-9, “7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.

9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. ” This statement is also supported in Acts 3:24-26. The promise was fulfilled when Jesus was sent to die for the worldly sins. Anyone can now respond to the Good News of Christ and receive salvation. In the Old Testament, there were many prophets including: Elijah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah among others. The prophets carry the message from God and delivers to the people as a way to provide guidance in order for the people to live in a way that makes pleases God (Heschel, 234). The prophets in the Old Testament performed various roles. For instance, from the calling of prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:10), God clearly defines the roles of prophets , “See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms to root out and pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build and to plant.

” Pulling down implies the role of prophets to suppress the evil spirits among the people of God. #4 the Beatitudes Mathew, a Jewish Christian, wrote his Gospel during turbulent times. The Jewish people of the Palestine were ruled over by the Roman Empire, in possession of strong military power. As a reaction to latest Jewish revolt, Roman forces had demolished Jerusalem, destroyed Jewish temple, and slaughtered its people, the central piece of Jewish divine life. The injured Jewish society was undergoing hard times to reshape its existence in a devastated world. They had to also struggle with the issue of Jewish practice and identity in heated argument with upcoming Jewish movement calling Jesus of Nazareth a Jewish Messiah. The peacemakers have turned out to be the oppressed.
