student response

please response to the posting below. please write as if you are the student. i only need up to 200 words. thanks. no reference. just plain response to the student's post below: An astounding 280,000 female military members have returned from a deployment from Iraq and Afghanistan which turns out to be 17.4 percent of our military. They come home unwelcomed, and are “less likely to find a job than male veterans and more likely to be a single parent with children to support” (Anchan, Hightower & Cruz, 2013). The main problem is the fact that they are not male. Our VA is not fully equipped to handle the problems a woman face, because they are experts in assisting their male counterparts. The kind of treatment they get when they return are sarcastic remarks from other male veterans. The article states “What did you do over there?’ some gray-haired male veterans in Akron at the Department of Veterans Affairs asked as they sized up her petite frame. ‘Did you sell Girl Scout cookies?’ one asked” (Anchan, Hightower & Cruz, 2013). Absolutely shameful in my opinion! This same woman had to prove she earned a purple heart because the military lost all records of the attack she was involved in. Fortunately, she had a camera on her person and recorded the damage from it. PTSD is common among our military, but for some reason as a woman it is placed to the side. It is hard for these women to receive the treatment and counseling needed to go on with life. When they are placed in counseling they are often placed in an all male group. A group of all male will not be able to understand what a woman goes through after returning home. It is different because of their role as a mother, and the need to continue that role. Another important issue is how our civilian and military public perceives women warriors. A lot of times they are not recognized, and when it comes to employment after returning from a deployment it is hard to find a job. Anchan, Hightower, and Cruz stated during an interview with a Marine: “Siska applied for more than 150 jobs posted on Department of Defense websites geared toward applicants with security clearances. The result always was the same.“They want to hire vets that are males, not females, and that was very apparent,” said Siska, who was deployed to Iraq in 2008 and 2009. “I had everything and my resume looked just like all the other guys that got jobs and I didn’t.” Even though they are just as experienced as men, it is more difficult to persuade employers of this fact. A disturbing fact of women returning home after deployment is sexual assault. According to the Department of Defense’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, “26,000 cases of sexual assault or unwanted sexual contact occurred in fiscal 2012. Of that estimate, 3,374 cases were reported” states Anchan, et al. It is not surprising, but one would think as military members this kind of act would be taboo; however, they are all human, and it is inevitable. Lastly, it is a constant worry if a mother is deployed. When they come home, they have to continue to take care of, and provide for their children. “… I’m not stopping ... I have a daughter to take care of and I know she’s going to have needs and college, so I’m going to provide” responds Briana Hawkes when asked about future deployments.
