Knowing the world versus knowing the arithmetic truths
Document Type:Essay
Subject Area:Philosophy
Notably, knowing the world surrounding us emanates from our experiences; what we see, hear, and feel by touch, or rather knowledge gained exclusively from our senses. Arithmetic truths, as a form of knowledge, are derived from reason or the extra scrutiny of the world as initially decipherable from our senses or experiences. As such, a person’s claim of ‘’knowing’’ the world around them relates closely to one’s experiences as a source of knowledge, indeed, the primary means of gaining knowledge. The mathematical knowledge, for instance, 2+2= 4, represents a level of knowledge beyond merely what can be gained from the common senses. Indeed, knowledge gained from experience is limited by various constraints to the human mind.
