The Sun Dance Adapted from Encyclopedia of the Great Plains Indians David Wishart ed. p. 199. The Sun Dance is a distinctive ceremony that is central to the religious identity of the indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. It developed among the horsemounted bison-hunting nations who populated the Great Plains in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of these nations have continued to practice the Sun Dance from the buffalo days into the present including the Arapahos Cheyennes Blackfoot Sioux Crow Arikara Assiniboine Gros Ventre Hidatsa Pawnee Plains Ojibwe Ponca Shoshones Utes and Mandan. The Canadian and U.S. governments perceived this ceremony as superstitious rather than religious and suppressed it and full liberty to practice the Sun Dance was regained only after the mid-twentieth century. Some Sun Dances helped prepare the way for and counseled him in his vision. In return for his gifts he’s given the Buffalo medicine.
