Nursing article critique: Name Course Institution Lecturer The article reviewed is nursing students' conception of clinical skills training before and after their first clinical placement: A quantitative evaluative study by Struksnes & Engelien published in nurse education in practice journal in 2007. Research problem According to the authors Struksnes & Engelien (2007) most of the nursing student learning in Norway is carried out through mandatory simulation exercise rather than traditional actual procedural training. However there are no large scale assessments on effectiveness of the approaches used to evaluate the outcomes on skills learnt through simulation exercise on the basis of their transferability to the actual clinical setting. The authors have placed the study problem within the context of existing knowledge. In the introduction section of the study the authors have made reference to several resources on the responsibility of educational institutions to ensure that nursing students acquire practical expertise mastering the procedure than those who did not have any prior experience. Summary/Conclusions Implications and Recommendations According to the authors the nursing students in Norway are required to perform a 10 weeks practice in nursing homes out the 50 weeks for a bachelor’s degree before placement. The importance of the 10 week nursing home practice is to. However these skills are taught through simulation exercises in laboratories through simulated patient situations as opposed to the traditional procedural training. Evaluation is based on students self-reporting and also perceived learning outcomes for the simulation training which has significant limitations on accessing student’s competence perception and experience. The study therefore recommends that the evaluation for outcomes on simulation should be accessed. Reference: Struksnes S. & Engelien R. I. (2016).
