Buddhism Beliefs Name Institution Response I concur with the post regarding the clear description of symbolisms attached to the lotus flower in Buddhism. It is true that accepts the doctrines and teachings of Buddhism. The flower represents reincarnation whereby when a soul leaves the world in one form it is reborn in different form. [...]

Order Description:

Buddhism and its beliefs are often expressed through rituals and art. Experiencing the world's religions states, “Vajrayana Buddhism is interested in the acquisition of both internal and external powers and holds that such powers may be attained through proper ritual. The ritual allows the individual to become identified with a particular Buddha or heavenly bodhisattva, thus giving the individual the power and protection of that heavenly being.” As an individual who studies Buddhism amongst other religions and beliefs, I like the Lotus flower and what it symbolizes. The Lotus flower means enlightenment. However, it has other meanings depending on what phase the flower is in. In Buddhist art, the fully grown Lotus flower means enlightenment, a closed bud signifies a time before enlightenment. When a flower is open partially with the middle still hidden, this means that enlightenment is beyond ordinary sight. The mud nourishing the roots represents our messy human lives. It represents our human experiences and our suffering that we seek to break free from in order to blossom. While the flower rises above the mud, the roots and stem remain in the mud where we live our lives. Buddhists.org states, “It grows in muddy water, and it is this environment that gives forth the flower’s first and most literal meaning: rising and blooming above the murk to achieve enlightenment.” There is a Zen phrase that I found on Village Zendo that goes, "May we exist in muddy water with purity, like a lotus." The color of the flower is also very important to its meaning. Buddhists.org states, “A white lotus flower refers to purity of the mind and the spirit. If a lotus flower is red, it refers to compassion and love. The blue lotus flower refers to the common sense; it uses wisdom and logic to create enlightenment. The pink lotus flower represents the history of Buddha and the historical legends of the Buddha. A purple lotus flower speaks of spiritual awakening and mysticism. Finally, the gold lotus flower represents all achievement of all enlightenment, especially in the Buddha.” Reference: Molloy, M. (2013). Experiencing the world's religions (6th ed.).
