The Supreme Court recently voted in favor of same-sex marriage, passing it into law. This allowed what had been practiced by some states for a long time and provided room for other states to object. There is a number of issues in which state courts in many parts of the country have declared that they are independent of federal courts. These issues range from the death penalty, the right to counsel, search and seizures, and a range of other rights provided for by the constitution. These schisms are dealt with in accordance with the United States Constitution, which has created only one powerful Supreme Court and left to the Congress the duty of establishing other lower federal courts.
