Obedience involves obeying orders from another who is recognized as an authority figure. While compliance is similar to obedience, it does not include an authority figure as one can choose to do as asked for social rewards or to avoid punishment. Cialdini and Goldstein (2004) argue that one of the reasons people accept social influence is to gain acceptance of individual members of a group to which the individual conforms. In this regard, this paper explores areas of conformity and compliance in a practical experiment and the role of media and peer groups in acquiring attitudes. Personal Experience The first person this writer asked about the three world leaders is her 12-year-old son. For instance, this writer tried to persuade the young lady that even though the media portrayed Putin in a negative light, he has done great things for Russians throughout his political career.
