Critical Review Name Institutional Affiliation Critical Review Zaller: The Nature and Origins of Mass Opinion Description John Zaller offers a straightforward yet refined model through which people are able to obtain answers regarding their political opinions. The model is called ‘Receive-Accept-Sample’ (RAS) model (Brown 2007). Theoretically the model is based on three beliefs. First people have varied attention to politics and so are exposed to different political elites. Second the extent of people’s reaction to political communication is influenced by their own knowledge of such affairs. Third people’s views on political undertakings are not fixed. Instead they change as other issues arise. Lastly in making political assumptions they tend to reach out for information that is nearest to them. Political consideration by the public is another key point that Zaller raises in support of his model. In consideration the public appraises the views of the elite and are influenced support these claims hence believable. Regardless the researchers downplayed the significance of the errors in the poll results yet they clearly had an impact on the overall outcome. For example the wireless/landline issue. In the end they said that although there were errors they did not present real challenges. On my part I think the actual extent of this fault is bigger than what the researchers noted. For one understanding whether there is a relationship between the landline/wireless access had to do with locations and possible racial composition of those areas would have portrayed a more conclusive picture.
