This need to address gender disparity seems to have dominated the minds of authors. Indeed, with the use of patriarchal perspective, Susan`s Glaspell`s novel “Trifles” and the Henrik Ibsen`s novel “A doll’s House” address the this gender issue with the use characters to reflect on this crucial issue. Therefore, this piece of work is going to explore how gender roles have been addressed in both societies that are depicted by the two authors. Both texts are centered on marriages which are presented by the authors in female perspective who are the protagonists in the novels. For instance, the novel “Trifles” we are introduced to a character by the name Mrs. Nora fails to obey her husband and we are told that she had been paying her own debts for more than ten years (Ibsen, 44).

On close examination of the character of Torvalds who happens to be her husband, is used in the play as a character to show the type of men who want to assume full control of their own wives thus leaving her wife with limited freedom. To him the definition of women roles is scanty. Additionally, Nora forged the signature of her father in order to get the loan and thus she didn’t see any problem while cheating his father for the sake of her marriage. in this context, the author makes use of Nora in a symbolic manner to symbolize “doll” for she had been denied her own freedom. The role of the women thus are seen as being those dedicated duties which are geared towards serving their children and husbands.

This are the stereotypes that the society advocates for and thus the authors aim at condemning the gender roles as a stereotype. On the other side, “Trifles” we discover another instance of gender roles in that Mrs. Wright was handling her duties that had been assigned to her based on her gender orientation. At one point she is seen perfuming her gender based roles with a lot of passion meaning that she had already conformed to her duties that society has assigned the both genders. She recalls being a young and beautiful girl who sang in the choir having a hopeful and happy spirit which all seems to have been taken away by the husband (Ibsen p. On the other hand, Nora seems to have also set up a journey to delivering herself from the cage that she had been confined in like a pet by her own husband although she follows a different route that seems to be different from that one taken by Mrs.
