As such, the person is unable to perform all or most of the facial movements that are controlled by the paralyzed muscles. They cannot smile because the enabling mechanisms have been deactivated by the inability of the muscles. They can’t roll their eyes or eyebrows and cannot frown because of the missing muscle action. The effect can be on one side of the face or both, meaning that the person may be expressive on one side and non-expressive on the other. The child with this syndrome may have crossed eyes so that they cannot laterally move their eyes and have to turn with turning objects in order to follow them as they pass. Still, in their mouth, there is likely to be a cleft palate or high and arched mouth roof.
