In 1951 when America was experiencing heightening racial discrimination Langston Hughes wrote a poem "Theme for English B" to address the need for racial unity and embrace the idea that we can learn a thing or two from individuals of other races. In "Theme for English B" Langston uses the literary devices of figurative language tone characterization and a stream-of-consciousness style of writing to show that two people can learn from each other regardless of their ethnicities. The Theme of the Poem The poem is focused primarily on sensitizing people that we can be a part of a person who comes from a different race. Therefore two people can learn line "I am the only colored student in my class " creates an image of an African-American student in a class full of whites. Personification becomes apparent when he gives life to the page. "And let that page come out of you." In this instance the author provides the page with animate qualities. To conclude Langston Hughes has applied literary devices in the verse "Theme for English B" to convey a powerful message on an issue which has been controversial in America for centuries.
