Order Description:

With a minimum of 85 words respond positively to: This week’s discussion board focuses on self-understanding and the influence of parenting. This unit is near and dear to me personally because I have a two-year-old who reflects a lot of what I read within the chapters. Preschoolers’ self-concepts largely consist of observable characteristics, such as their name, physical appearance, possessions, and everyday behaviors (Berk & Meyers, 2016)(pg. 359). Self-concept is a warm, sensitive parent-child relationship that seems to foster a more positive aspect, being coherent early. Conversations about personally experienced events, which helped them understand themselves (Berk & Meyers, 2016). Self-esteem is the judgments we make about our own worth and the feelings associated with those judgments. Self-evaluations are among the most important aspects of self-development that leads to self-esteem (Berk & Meyers, 2016). Emotional understanding the more parents label emotions, explain them, and express warmth and enthusiasm when conversing with preschoolers, the more “emotion words” children use and the better developed their emotional understanding (Berk & Meyers, 2016)(pg. 362). Emotional self-regulation is the ability to manage the experiences and expression of emotion. Self-conscious emotions are feelings that involve injury to or enhancement of their sense of self. Empathy and sympathy- empathy is another emotional capacity that becomes more common in early childhood. Sympathy is the feelings of concern or sorrow for another’s plight. Being consistent in how you raise your child and instilling positivity will foster positive development in relation to the concepts mentioned above (Berk & Meyers, 2016). The four main child-rearing styles are: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and uninvolved. Authoritative parents are warm, attentive, and sensitive to their child’s needs. Authoritarian is cold and rejecting and frequently degrades the child. Permissive is warm but overindulgent or inattentive. Uninvolved is emotionally detached and withdrawn. Authoritative is the best type of child rearing style to approach parenting (Berk & Meyers, 2016).
