According to Max, in the late 18th century, many philosophers believed that science would play an imperative role in transforming the society. In particular, philosophers and public discourse regarded science and technology not as end ends in themselves but as instruments for transforming the society. They considered scientific power and technological knowledge as ways of making comprehensive improvements in all the conditions of life. Max explains that the wholesome development of the society had been held ransom by the widespread social issues such as religious dogmatism and inferior cultural practices. The medieval age were conversant with various discoveries in the 15th and 16th century such as printing, renaissance art, reformation, and the discovery of new continents. The technical novelty revamped the democratic landscape.
