Document 1

According to Bradshaw (10), poverty is caused by a combination of political. Social, economic, individual, geographical and cultural factors. Some people are poor because of individual factors such as bad choice, laziness, inherent disabilities as well as incompetence. People can also be poor as a result of non-productive cultural values. Systematic political and economic structures can also be the reason people are poor. They do control access to development opportunities and decide who to or not access them. The systems prevent the poor from accessing opportunities that can make them rich. This is in the form of denying the poor key social institutions, job opportunities, healthcare, political representation as well as financial support that is key to development. As a result, poor people with good ideas remain poor (Bradshaw 18).
