mini paper

Mini Paper 1: Due by Friday, September 30 by 11:59 PM Premise: The foundations for public education in the United States are grounded in the Puritanical beliefs of our forefathers: ALL children must be able to read and write in order to maintain the beliefs/foundations of the community. Some of the changes our country has experienced have been very simple and went relatively unnoticed. Other changes have impacted the vast majority of peoples. Once of these is the belief in the purpose of education. Foundationally speaking, education in its Puritanical sense, should be to MAINTAIN the beliefs of a community. Horace Mann argued that education should be to PROGRESS the beliefs of a community, “Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men, the balance wheel of the social machinery.” (Cremin, p.87) In your essay, discuss the following using the Urban and Wagoner text, Chapters 1-5, and the PDFs/links by Franklin, Jefferson, as well as the Cremin text (Mann): What does Horace Mann mean by his quote above? How is this different from the Puritanical belief system of the purpose of education, or is it? What changes have occurred (through the early part of the 20th century) that have had a major impact on how we view education’s purpose? Who else in our history would agree with the Puritans and why/how? Who else in our history would agree with Mann and why/how? What events in our history have indicated that we are still in a Puritanical belief system? What events in our history have indicated that we are in a progressive belief system? What CURRENT events indicate we still are connected to our Puritanical beliefs on the purpose of education? What CURRENT events indicate we are still connected to our progressive beliefs on the purpose of education? You should incorporate as much of the readings as possible to address the question, including direct quotes from the readings. Your response should be a MINIMUM 600 words. MINIMUM. Double space your response. Please read over your answer and double check for errors/spellings/grammar.
