General Format Considerations Topic: You may speak on any topic you wish, provided the task or project is something that can be accomplished in the required time limit of 5-8 minutes. Structure: You will want to organize your speech into three main points. Be sure to include: • Attention getting opening • Purpose for the speech • Your credibility • Why the audience needs to listen • Preview of main points • Transitions linking main points • Review of your main points, reminding us what we heard • End with a bang It is strongly recommended that you consult the speech evaluation form for this speech to be sure that you address every technical part of the speech that will be evaluated for a grade. Time Limit: 6 minutes. Aim for 6! You will be penalized by 5 pts for every 30 seconds under or over the time limit. Research: Outside research is optional. However, you need to explain your experience/expertise in completing the task or project you choose to describe/demonstrate to the class. Grading Rubric for Describe/Demonstrate Speech “A” (68-75 pts) speeches will include all of the elements of the speech evaluation form, including attention getter, purpose of speech, credibility, audience motivation, preview statement, three balanced main points, good transitions, review the preview, end with a bang, and show that the student practiced, practiced, and practiced. Delivery is strong, fluid, and oriented to the audience. The audience should have enough information and detailed instruction to be able to complete the task or project demonstrated or described. “B” (60-68 pts) speeches will incorporate most of above but may leave out some important aspects, not be as well organized, or not be as fluid in delivery. The audience understands the process but does not have enough information or details to complete the task or project demonstrated or described. “C” (52-60 pts) speeches will incorporate only some of the above. No attempt at attention getter, connectives or end with a bang is evident. Some aspects of the project or task are incomplete. Grading Rubric for D/D Outline “A” (25 pts) outlines will include all elements of the 3-2-3 outline, use full sentences, include APA format references and reference page (if required), and be free from typos or misspellings. “B” (20 pts) outlines will be slightly incomplete, may be missing a few parts of the 3-2-3 outline, may have errors with the references, may have a typo or misspelling, but overall well written and organized. “C” (15 pts) outlines may be missing multiple parts of the 3-2-3 outline, may be written without full sentences, may be missing APA references and reference page, and may have multiple writing issues. Things to Keep In Mind: • Details make a speech more interesting (it wasn’t just a car, it was a cherry red, Miata convertible with Italian leather seats and gold plated tire rims!) • Specific names, places, brands, etc. are better than general terms • Balance your time among all three main points. • Be creative, clever, and unique: As in all things, creativity is appreciated and rewarded in this class.
