MM250 Midterm For the first four Units of this course you have learned several topics in discrete mathematics including number representations logical reasoning elementary probability and set theory. You are now being asked to apply this knowledge to real world situations by filling the role of a “subject-matter expert” for an upcoming television show. The working title for this show is “The Patty Madeye Mysteries”. You will be working with the writers and producers for this exciting show. The staff will need your help in interpreting and analyzing evidence for robbery missing persons and embezzlement cases as storylines for the show. The show will be a “cyber-crime” series including a number of episodes where you will be solving crimes using your mathematics and problem-solving skills. For this Midterm Project you will help produce the first four episodes. Each episode contains 2-4 scenes with questions to answer. There are 16 question – you must offer evidence from the data and/or from your knowledge of set theory. Your explanation should be 2-3 paragraphs explaining how this can be solved with set theory. Suspect chemistry students in the room = no. of students in the room – students who are in the students and are neither chemistry 101 students nor are commuters = 76-41 =35 => (V n P) = 35.There are 300 commuter students who take chemistry of whom 10 take chemistry 101. So non-chemistry 101 commuter students are 290 (300-10). There are also 41 non-commuter non-chemistry 101 students. Therefore the total non-chemistry 101 students in the university are 290 + 41 = 331. Total students in the university = total chemistry 101 students + total non-chemistry 101 students = 150 + 331 = 481. It implies the non-chemistry students not in the building are 481 – 41-35-115 = 290 [...]
