Faulkner was born in 1897 and died in 1962.He is a celebrated writer of American fiction having authored several other short stories screenplays poems and plays. He began writing in 1919 although he rose to prominence between 1920 and 1930.His writing was rewarded in 1949 when he received the Nobel prize of literature in 1949.He is famously known for works such as A fable (authored in 1954) and the Reivers which was published in 1962 and awarded the Pulitzer prize for fiction. Among the short stories published by Faulkner A Rose for Emily remains the most famous. Summary of the Story The story revolves around the mystical life of Emily who is born in a prominent family whose fortunes dwindles with time. the story when the discovery of Emily’s death becomes consistent with the knowledge of Homer’s demise. Emily’s attribute of secretiveness is mystical in nature and readers find it hard to understand how she can comfortably live with the corpse of her father and Homer. The irony of the characterization of Homer is envisaged when he initially makes a posturing of a tough and dominant individual only for him to be enticed into death by Emily. At the end of the story Emily remains an enigma in the eyes of the readers. When she dies at seventy-four years it becomes difficult to understand how she remained a single woman in a society that esteems the conventions of marriage.
