It’s highly involving not only to the people who may be the subject of the study but also to the people living in the same area as the subject. In short, the sensibility of engaged research could be said to be carrying the load of groups of human relations and overlapping networks. Originally, engagement could be referred to as a pledge, and therefore this means that engaged research is a pledge to something or is pledged to something. This context of engaged research being a pledge, therefore, brings us to its principles. There are seven principles of engaged research, and they include relationality, spatiality, temporality, epistemology, intersectionality, methodology and ontology (James, 2014). By handing power to the participants, it means that they control the research topic, methodology and the recommendations and conclusions.

In most cases, the participants in participatory research are community-based organizations or members of a community. These participants are to talk about problems they are facing and suggest solutions. Just like in community-based research, participatory research is also oriented to impact the lives of the community members positively. Participatory research methods may include essay writing, picture/digital stories, stakeholder meetings, inquiries among others. There may be some ethical conflicts involving shared resources such as laboratories among others. The research methods that could be used in this case could be qualitative through experimentations and observations, and it could also be quantitative through surveys. Differences/similarities. From the discussion above, there is a common factor that is witnessed across translational, community-based and participatory types of engaged research.
