Order Description:

read http://rc.rcjournal.com/content/58/3/438 Please read and carefully review Chapter#5 "Staffing Systems" and the RC journal article "Respiratory Therapy Organizational Changes Are Associated with Increased Respiratory Care Utilization". According to staffing experts in healthcare, an acuity-based staffing system should give hospitals/managers the necessary information to provide schedulers with: 1) the right number of staff; 2) staff with the necessary skill-sets; 3) staff at the correct clinical location; 4) staff with the appropriate assignment; all at the right time and circumstances. Clearly, reaching these goals are easier said than done! As Medicare and third-party payors (private health insurance) continue to decrease reimbursements for hospital-related services, it is also imperative that facilities turn their attention to tighter controls over the cost of ancillary services (Respiratory Care) to meet expectations for controlling the overall costs of health care. In my view, every healthcare decision is an allocation decision. We have a limited pool of resources and capital and therefore must use them wisely. For this exercise, please develop a set of well-written responses to the following: 1. Summarize the key aspects (points) of Chapter#5. (Please note: use of bullet points in most of your written assignments are quite acceptable) 2. Do you believe that ancillary services are being specifically targeted by hospitals for cost reduction? If so, why target RC staffing levels as a means for decreasing costs?
