On the Reliability of the Action-Sentence Compatibility Effect (Example)

Document Preview:

Introduction Research shows that to communicate or use language one depends on the construction of mental simulations of described events. Language approaches indicate that we understand language description of actions by simulating the actions. It has also been found that adults comprehend an activity that they observed through mentally simulating the action using the same neural connection involved in performing the task themselves. An example of this is the kicking of a football. when someone tells you about their experience scoring a goal one starts to experiences the kicking of the ball in the mind. In fact if one is a footballer they will begin feeling themselves kick the ball. This can also happen when reading a story and you suddenly start feeling like you had a similar experience. Proponents of language comprehension like Barsalou (1999) call this mental simulation of a described event. Action-sentence compatibility effect (ACE) gives a great association with oral-motor skills during typical development. An example is when children lick food from their mouths which is associated with the length of the sentences they spoke and the vocabulary size. Oral motor skills are also associated with manual-motor skills. Manual –motor skills involve the use of hands and fingers. When a child is in their middle childhood their fluency in the repetition of a sentence on non-words like babbling is attached to their fluency in pegboard tasks. Research shows the same associations when it comes to children with autism. These oral and manual motor skills helped to distinguish between children with autism from typically developing children CITATION Ger08 \p " 45" \l 1033 (Gernsbacher Sauer and Geye 45). For pre-school autistic children oral motor skills were linked to speech fluency. For teenage autistic children oral-motor skills like tongue wiggling were linked to manual motor skills. [...]
