Mallard better because her character is clearly defined in the story. She has a heart condition that has her requiring care. Any news divulged to her must be done with caution especially sad or tragic news because shocking her could result in a heart attack for her ailing heart. (39) As for Brently mallard we know little about him because he dies in an accident soon after the story begins. The role of the minor characters in the story are there to lend the support needed by Mrs. Mallard is a sympathetic one. She sympathizes with Mrs. Mallard because of her delicate heart condition and her marriage which was a prison of sorts for her. She also sympathizes with her on the death of her husband.
