The plot of these stories both brings in to reality Death in a given story which is depicted by symbolism setting and plot of the story and characters who through their interactions result to the development of the theme. The main aim of this essay is to compare and contrast the theme of death as developed in the “Greasy Lake’ and “The Story of an Hour” stories. The characters in the Boyles’ The titles of these books also address the theme of death as they all give a hint on the premonition that something bad will happen. Death being a tragic and a sensitive event is a theme which has been well developed in the plot of both stories bringing about its similarity and differences. Characters cheat death and in the story of one hour irony of death is highly developed by Mrs Mallard. The narrator of the greasy lake in the end notices that they were not even bad boys and realizes that they can control their fate and decisions. The characteristics of the environment surrounding the main characters itself is devastating and shows decay and death. People are never ready for death and it comes without giving a warning.
