It is at this store that Sammy meets with different characters and he holds different opinions of them. His wife had died and that is why writer uses the Sammy to imply the mystery of minds that people pose regardless of their education which is seen in the observation skills he possesses. First person narration has been used in “Cathedral” to unveil the events of the story to the reader chronologically and the perspectives of the different characters have also been employed through this narration. The choice not to name the narrator for instance gives the reader his perspective of lack of self-awareness. The construct of the family has been shown in “Why I Live at the P. O” due to the different perspectives of the characters in the story such as Sister Mama and Stella-Rondo. Work Cited Updike John. The Early Stories 1953-1975. New York: Ballantine Books 2004.
