The Assignment: Observe in an early classroom environment (children ages 3 years to 5 years) to determine the appropriateness and adequacy/lack of the multicultural materials in the classroom. Make a list of the multicultural items you see. The list must include 10 items at a minimum. Give specifics- what types of books did you see? clothes? Answer the following questions based on the materials: Are the items appropriate or do they represent stereotypes? What culture is represented by the item? Is it available for the children to use and interact with daily? Include a summary paragraph with a minimum of 7 sentences that discusses the following: how the items teach culture and diversity, how the items were used in the classroom, recommendations for improvement or suggestions for having a diverse classroom. Acceptable Length The list must include 10 items at a minimum, reflection questions included and a summary paragraph with a minimum of 7 sentences. Grading Criteria The assignment is graded on a 100 point scale; it is worth 3% of your overall class grade. Maximum points are given when: A list of 10 items is included (5 points for each item) The culture item represents is listed (1 points for each) Availability of item is noted (1point for each item) Summary paragraph included of 7-10 sentences (0-10 points) Quality recommendations and commendations given in summary paragraph (0 – 10 points) Spelling and grammar – 1 – 10 points deducted for spelling and grammar.
