There are primarily two types of communication; that is verbal and non-verbal communication. Also, communication often occurs through different communication media. This paper aims to discuss communication media, the primary sources of verbal and non-verbal communication as well as distinguish the difference between hearing and listening. Communication media refers to the mode of delivering and receiving information or data (Schultz, Utz & Göritz, 2011). In telecommunication, communication media could refer to the tools or methods that facilitate communication and enables the exchange of information. This category of communication entails two types; that is, written and oral communication. Written communication entails any information conveyed through written symbols such as language and these include SMS, texts, chats, e-mail and typed documents among others (Wigham, & Chanier, 2013).

Oral communication includes spoken words conveyed through face-to-face, video conferencing or voice chat with other media. Collectively verbal communication involves speaking, listening, writing and reading. Verbal communication can be conveyed through primary sources which essential present first-hand accounts and information relevant to a given activity or event. Hearing is an involuntary process in which a person continuously receives sound vibrations. On the other hand, listening refers to the acquired skills that can enable a person to receive sounds through his or her ear and then transform them into meaningful ideas. In simpler terms, listening is the act of carefully hearing and interpreting the meaning of sentences and words spoken by a speaker during a discussion (Gosselin & Gagne, 2011). Unlike hearing, listening often requires concentration and attention given that the human mind is easily interrupted.
