This paper looks at the similarities and differences between these psychology concepts of positive and negative reinforcements as well as positive and negative punishments. A reinforcement in behavioral psychology refers to anything stimulus that is used to strengthen or increase the probability of a specific response by introducing a favorable condition. Reinforcing is regarded as a reward based conditioning because the favorable condition acts as a reward. There are two types of reinforcements in behavioral psychology namely; positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement in behavioral conditioning that involves addition or increment of stimuli to increase their response. In psychology, punishment is a fundamental concept of operant conditioning which is mainly aimed at decreasing the chances of certain unwarranted behavior from repeating.

Punishment is categorized into two main classes namely; positive punishment and negative punishment. Negative punishment involves taking a certain favorable stimulus away to minimize the likelihood of behavior of happening again. On the other hand, positive punishment involves the addition of something unpleasant to reduce the likelihood of undesirable behavior from happening again. This two categories of punishments both have some similarities and differences in how they work (Cooper et al. The consequences of the mistake in class discourage the student from repeating the mistake. For negative punishment, a good example is a scenario where a student who makes a mistake in class is declined privileges such as access to video games by their parents after they are informed about their child’s indiscipline cases.
