Name: Instructor: Course: Date:Wal-Mart Penetration into Japan Wal-Mart is an international retail business which deals with consumer goods. It was incepted by a man called Sam Walton in the year 1962. Throughout its operation the company manages to get its profit by lowering its costs increasing the sales volume proper management of the inventory and promotion of its products through advertisements. The continuous success of the company motivated the managers to adopt an expansion strategy right from 1990’s. Wal-Mart started bargaining for acquisition with Seiyu in 1999. Towards the year 2002 it bought 6.1 percent of Seiyu’s Shares. This was how the acquisition began approaching the year 2008 Wal-Mart attained full ownership of Seiyu. However from 2002 and to 2007 the company continued recording losses despite the acquisition. Wal-Mart’s Global Expansion The entry of Wal-Mart in Japan took place in 2002. The company still Acquire Seiyu in 2008 about 3 billion dollars; there is a lot of doubt that it is going to recover the amount in the long run. This is because; it has continued to record some losses and have closed up some branches in 2009. However by 2011 reports have it that the company has started rising putting into consideration that it was still operating under the same name Seiyu. This means that Wal-Mart challenges can be attributed to the initial strategies. Thus if Wal-Mart considered studying the Japanese Culture it would have succeeded in its strategy just like in Mexico and Canada. Work Cited Besanko David et al. Economics of strategy.
