U.s Constitution

The Constitution-A Government Blueprint with Flaws? As noted in the Introduction to this chapter, the United States Constitution is an extraordinary document that has served as the basis for constitutions of nearly every other "democratic" country in the world today. It literally created a new concept of governing. It was a product of COMPROMISE. Compromise between large and small states, and the forefathers, who did not always share the same vision of the future of the United States. For example Thomas Jefferson saw the future as primarily an agricultural nation of farmers and a rural life. In contrast Alexander Hamilton saw a growing urban country of expanding commerce and trade. Our discussion this week is designed to dig a bit deeper into issues contained in the development and final product of the U.S. Constitution. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Choose ONE of the following questions to frame your response. Question #1 - When crafting the U.S. Constitution, the framers advanced four political principles that, taken together, established a new political order. What are those principles? How did they reflect the Framers revolutionary values and concerns about a government with too much power? Do you believe that our government has too much power today? Why/Why Not? Question #2 - How did the Framers handle the issue of slavery? What were the reasons for the compromises reached on this question? Was this outcome consistent with the underlying values of the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Some historians believe the framers motives were driven by protecting their personal interests before the country's? Would you agree or disagree with this statement? Why/Why Not?
