Mental Healthcare in Juvenile Detention Facilities Name: School Affiliation: Reducing Mental Health Disorders in Juveniles Detention Facilities within the United States Introduction to Problem According to research by the Children’s Defense Fund three out of four juvenile detainees in the United States exhibit a mental health disorder. Facilities responsible for detaining these juveniles have been under intensifying legal pressure from the parents public and non-governmental organizations to offer mental health assistance to juvenile detainees (Hyde 2016). Mental health disorders continue to pose a severe challenge to the effective rehabilitation of detained juveniles who total to about 70 000 children including those in residential detention facilities (Children’s Defense Fund 2012). Juveniles are highly vulnerable to mood sickness anxiety substance abuse and personality conflicts. Depression attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) manic-depressive illness and substance abuse include the various common mental illnesses among juvenile detainees. Locking up of juveniles in solitary confinement that reject detention centers as incidental treatments for the youth only for those with mental health problems to worsen. Mental health screening should be made mandatory in every detention facility to enable the provision of interventions and preventive measures to detainees with mental health needs.
