As a reminder, slide:ology addresses how visuals support a message in a presentation. The content in this book explains how the presentation is about the idea and not slides; the slides are there to thoroughly enhance the message you are conveying. This week, you will read the following chapters from slide:ology (bit.ly Chapter 12: Manifesto: The five theses of the power of a presentation. Chapter 1: Creating a new slide ideology. Chapter 2: Creating ideas, not slides. Chapter 5: Thinking like a designer. Chapter 9: Creating Movement. You will also read the following chapters from Resonate (bit.ly Chapter 9: Change Your World When you have finished, discuss one new piece of information you learned from one of the chapters. Be sure to explain how you will use this information moving forward in your presentations. Share your thoughts below. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 Inspirational Presenters: A Discussion For this discussion, you will analyze the speaking style of your industry role model, based on the Julian Treasure TEDtalk from this week’s learning materials. First, think about a speaker who you find to be inspiring (from your industry) and find a video of that person speaking at a conference or a similar event. Typically these videos are at least five minutes and can last as long as a few hours; choose one that is at least five minutes. As you watch the video, think about how the speaker employs the ideas of the HAIL method in what they say. Also consider how the speaker creates a positive association with the audience. For your first post, embed a video (or paste a link) of an inspirational presenter in action along with a brief analysis on the individual's speaking style, based on Julian Treasure’s recommendations. Explain how the speaker uses the qualities of register, timbre, prosody, pace, pitch and volume to their advantage. Listen to the video with a critical ear; are there some qualities that the speaker doesn’t use? Based on what you know about oral communication, how may the speaker improve their delivery?
