(Angelou,1994) The authors historical and cultural set up influenced her writing of the poem. The author in her poem “still I rise” represents black Americans and the women. The poem talks about how several people may talk down on, demean, demonize the women, blacks and their culture but it will not hinder them from above all those. (poetry analysis,2018) Maya wrote the poem to be the voice of the demeaned and the voiceless. In the poem “still I rise”, the author has advanced several themes. ” (Line 5), "my sexiness” (line 25) and “my haughtiness” (line 17). Her pride is also expressed in her repeated words “I rise”. The other theme expressed in this poem is resilience. The speaker puts emphasis on her strong will and determination to defy all kinds of bigotry and discrimination that she may face.
